I started the new year at Paderne, where I attended the Medieval Fair. Not quite so exciting as last year, when they had jousting, but it was still a splendid way to start the year. It’s a pity the tourist board is not interested in championing these events and publicising them.
It was a pleasant day, and I wandered around, eating roast pork rolls and some disgustingly delicious cakes and pastries, listening to the various bands, and watching the various contests, including archery contests and sword fights, and an amusing take on exotic dancing, with some lanky guy wagging his bottom to a flute and tabard.
Have a look at the video, (scroll to the bottom of the page) and join me next New Year.

Hi John
Thanks for the video. Which day is best to go or does it not matter

Hi Christine,
I have just done a search on the web to find out this year’s dates, but of course, it being Portugal they dont bother to tell anyone. The first entry that came up was my own article which, altho gratifying, wasn’t much help for this year. I assume the crucial dates will be Dec 31 and Jan 1 as they are saturday and sunday. I assume folks will not want to be done out of their bank holiday so it will probably run over to Jan 2nd, but I would go at the weekend if I were you. Maybe see you there.
best wishes, john
